Ghana must turn horticulture into global export powerhouse – Vice President Naana Jane

Vice President Naana Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has called for Ghana to transform its horticulture industry into a global export powerhouse. She emphasized that Ghana possesses the capacity to emulate the success of countries like Kenya by expanding beyond the production of flowers and other horticultural products. Speaking at the opening of the 14th Ghana Garden and Flower Show, the Vice President highlighted that horticulture offers a broader economic opportunity that involves growers, skills, services, markets, and livelihoods.

She stressed the necessity of developing the entire horticultural value chain, including reliable transport, storage, quality standards, and market access. Government agricultural programs, such as Feed Ghana, provide a foundation for industry expansion, but improvements in irrigation, inputs, greenhouse production, and market linkages could further enhance the sector's growth.

The Vice President also connected horticulture to Ghana's environmental goals, noting that green initiatives should be integrated into development plans. She urged stakeholders to collaborate in strengthening standards, financing, and market access to enable Ghanaian horticultural businesses to compete internationally.
