For the US news industry, a tough summer draws to a close with McClatchy chain’s cuts

The McClatchy newspaper chain has made significant cuts to its workforce and publications as the news industry faces a challenging summer. The Miami Herald and other papers owned by McClatchy have experienced layoffs, accounting for nearly a third of all unionized workers in the company. Union leaders expressed concern over the severity of the situation, particularly for The Miami Herald, which relies heavily on its presence in Florida, a crucial state for the newspaper's operations.

The layoffs include the entire writing staff of El Nuevo Herald, the Spanish-language publication, and other newsrooms across the nation. The company cited a need for a different approach, stating that subscriber interest no longer supports its current investment in local news reporting. Other media organizations have also faced similar challenges this summer, including USA Today Co., which recently relocated some U.S.-based video producer jobs to India and laid off photo editors.
