First drive: Chery Q set to disrupt the entry-level EV segment

The Chery Q is set to enter the South African market as one of the most affordable electric vehicles (EVs) later this month. Competing against the Geely E2 and BYD Dolphin Surf, which start at R339 900 and R341 900 respectively, the Q will be priced at R349 900. During a pre-launch drive, the Citizen Motoring found the Chery Q to have all the qualities of a market disruptor.

One of the key selling points of the Chery Q is its battery size. With a 42.7kWh battery, it delivers 90kW of power and 115Nm to the rear axle. This gives it a competitive edge over the Geely E2's 39.4kWh battery and BYD Dolphin Surf's 30.1 and 38.9kWh batteries, which send out 85kW/150Nm and 55kW/135Nm respectively. The Q also boasts a ground clearance of 162mm, which is larger than its competitors.

Chery claims the Q can travel up to 400km on a single charge, which is significantly higher than the E2's 325km and the Dolphin Surf's 232km. The energy consumption of the Q was also impressive, coming in at 10.9kWh/100km, which equates to a cost of only R43.60 to travel 100km. This made it considerably cheaper than the gasoline-powered alternatives.

The driving experience of the Chery Q is smooth and effortless. With a 0-100km/h sprint time of 13.5 seconds and a top speed of 135km/h, the Q is well-suited for daily city traffic. Despite the instant power of an all-electric vehicle, the Q efficiently manages energy consumption without the need for aggressive recuperative braking. The cabin is spacious, refined, and features a 15.6-inch infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Overall, the Chery Q offers a competitive price tag, impressive range, and a comfortable driving experience, making it a strong contender in the entry-level EV segment.
