Thai opposition to file no-confidence motion by September end

Bangkok, September 12, 2026 - Thailand's opposition parties intend to file a no-confidence motion against the ruling government by the end of this month, according to a statement by opposition whip Parit Wacharasindhu. The opposition has targeted Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, as well as Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaichanok Chidchob for potential debate.

At a parliamentary session earlier on Saturday, Parit announced the formation of a working group to finalize the details of the motion and compile a list of ministers to be censured. The opposition remains committed to its original timeline and aims to submit the motion within September. Contrary to speculation, the opposition does not await the Election Commission's ruling on a Senate election collusion case, as the outcome is anticipated on September 14.

The opposition is targeting a combination of publicized issues, such as alleged cheating in local government recruitment exams, alleged collusion in the Senate election, and the TH-AI Passport project. Additionally, the opposition is investigating undisclosed issues for some time but has yet to bring them to light. These issues may arise between now and the no-confidence debate.

Each opposition party has been tasked with gathering information on specific ministers, with Anutin Charnvirakul and Chaichanok Chidchob already identified. The opposition will consider any new issues that emerge until the no-confidence debate. The debate will likely focus on the prime minister and ministers, but if evidence emerges that a minister has prioritized personal interests over public service, that information will also be included.

The opposition is currently evaluating allegations linked to Buriram province, but the specific nature of these allegations will be determined based on the merits of the case.
