Fire at nursing home in Chile kills 16 elderly residents

A devastating fire erupted at a nursing home in Chile's Araucanía region, resulting in the tragic loss of 16 elderly residents and leaving 10 others injured. The fire broke out on Friday night and was swiftly brought under control by firefighters. Images circulating on social media depicted towering flames engulfing the single-story building in the darkness.

Local authorities expressed profound sorrow over the loss of life, with the municipality of Pitrufquén issuing an official statement. Out of the 26 elderly individuals residing at the facility, ten fortunate souls managed to escape the blaze and were rushed to the local hospital.

Firefighters were seen diligently working throughout the day to clear debris and remove the collapsed corrugated metal roofing. The municipality's mayor, Jacqueline Romero, conveyed the community's collective grief, stating that various support systems, including municipal health and public safety teams, firefighters, and police, were deployed to assist those affected by the tragedy.

Provincial prosecutor Jorge Granada announced that authorities were conducting thorough investigations to determine the origin and cause of the fire, as well as to rule out any involvement from external parties. The owners of the private care home were summoned to provide statements regarding the incident. It was revealed that the facility had a history of operational issues, having faced administrative proceedings and fines since 2019.

A local official revealed that the home had been a repeat offender, operating without proper regulation.

Previous warnings had been issued by the municipality, as the care home was found to be non-compliant with regulations and subjected to sanitary enforcement proceedings. Chilean President Jose Antonio Kast demanded a thorough examination of the situation, urging necessary corrective measures to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
