EU Examines Funding for Ukraine-Led FREYJA Missile Defense System

The European Commission is currently considering potential funding for FREYJA, an anti-ballistic missile system spearheaded by Ukraine. Europe is currently facing a significant shortage of such missiles, as the United States has limited its production due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius announced on Friday that the European Union might offer "some form of financial aid" for FREYJA and other combined EU-Ukrainian defense initiatives.

Kubilius stated that the funding could originate from the €90 billion ($104 billion) Ukraine assistance loan or other instruments, such as the €1.5 billion ($1.7 billion) European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP). Initiated by Ukraine, FREYJA was upgraded to a European level during a July meeting in Paris, where 10 nations joined the effort.

Representatives from Fire Point, Kongsberg, Weibel, Saab, Diehl Defence, Hensoldt, Thales, Safran, Sener, and Leonardo gathered in Oslo on Wednesday to plan the subsequent stages. The project aims to integrate existing European missile-defense components with an affordable interceptor being developed in Ukraine, with the goal of delivering tangible outcomes by 2027.

However, Kubilius did not provide a broader timeline for deployment. The industry participants have expressed caution, with some being less optimistic, suggesting that a deployable system may take at least two years.
