China’s Xi urges BRICS to take on peacemaking role in Middle East war

Chinese President Xi Jinping called upon the BRICS bloc to assume a peacemaking role in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, during a summit addressing member countries in New Delhi on Saturday. In a statement, CCTV reported Xi's assertion that China would collaborate with other BRICS nations to fulfill this responsibility, emphasizing that the war does not align with the shared interests of the international community.

The BRICS grouping comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. Established in 2009, the organization aimed to challenge the global power dynamics dominated by the United States and its Western allies. Collectively, the member nations represent over 40% of the world's population and constitute nearly a quarter of the global economy.

Xi described BRICS as a "leading group in the Global South" and a model of self-reliance among emerging and developing countries, advocating for innovation-driven development. The Chinese leader announced that China would assume the BRICS chairmanship the following year and host the 19th BRICS summit, according to CCTV.
