BRICS backs India’s UNSC bid, slams Pahalgam attack

UN Secretary-General's spokesperson Stephane Dujarric has expressed support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for the reform of the UN Security Council. At the 18th BRICS Summit, Dujarric emphasized the need for the organization to adapt to the realities of the 21st century, as the current permanent five-member structure of the Security Council no longer reflects the world in 2026.

She reiterated that the heart of the UN's peace and security architecture is the Security Council, which must become more representative and effective. The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met with PM Modi during the summit, discussing global conflicts such as those in the Middle East and Ukraine. The Secretary-General believes India can play a significant role as a bridge-builder in helping the conflicting parties communicate and achieve a peaceful settlement.

The New Delhi Declaration, adopted during the BRICS Summit, reaffirmed the grouping's commitment to global governance reform, multilateralism, and a more representative international system. BRICS called for increased participation and representation of emerging market and developing countries, particularly from Africa, Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean, in decision-making processes and structures.
