Bezzecchi smashes San Marino lap record to take pole ahead of Marquez

Marco Bezzecchi, riding for Aprilia, smashed the all-time lap record at Misano World Circuit during practice for the Red Bull Grand Prix of San Marino on Saturday. Bezzecchi broke the one minute and 30 seconds barrier, completing the lap in 1:29.982, securing pole position for the upcoming San Marino Grand Prix. This marked the first time a rider had achieved this feat at his home track.

The Italian rider admitted that the qualifying process was challenging, with numerous yellow flags affecting concentration. Bezzecchi noted that in the first stint of the qualifying session, he stayed on the track an additional lap to establish his fastest time, which was ultimately his best. He expressed his happiness with the result, despite encountering interference from Johann Zarco of LCR Honda during his race.

Marc Marquez, Marquez's Ducati teammate, and Fermin Aldeguer of Gresini Racing were among the riders on the front row. Marquez attempted to improve his pace in the later stages of the session but pulled out of both attempts, citing concerns about exceeding limits on the turns. Bezzecchi's performance was seen as a strong warning to his championship rivals, with many acknowledging his exceptional speed, particularly in the fast corners.

The current championship standings saw Jorge Martin leading with 256 points, followed by Marc Marquez (237 points) and Marco Bezzecchi (232 points).
