Beyond mooncakes: rediscovering the harvest behind Mid-Autumn

The Mid-Autumn Festival, traditionally observed through mooncakes, lanterns, and family reunions, has roots deeply entrenched in the act of harvesting. This observation is highlighted by an art installation in Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown, Kwai Chai Hong, where rice takes center stage, symbolizing the festival's origins. The installation, co-organized by Zeen Chang, draws inspiration from traditional rice fields, mills, and rural imagery, evoking the journey from field to table.

Rice, beyond being a staple food, carries with it memories, habits, and lessons about gratitude, hard work, and the effort behind food, as emphasized by the Chinese saying "li li jie xin ku" and the Malay expression "kalau tak habis makan, nanti nasi menangis". Chang points out that every grain of rice begins with a seed, dependent on fertile soil, weather, and labor, reflecting the interconnected effort and abundance across Malaysia's cultures.

The installation's pavilion, with its lanterns, rice sacks, and rural motifs, aims to highlight the often-overlooked value of rice in Malaysian life. This symbol of interdependence between different communities resonates universally, as rice is ubiquitous in Malaysian households, from homes to kopitiams, crossing ethnic and social boundaries.

The rooster bowl, a traditional object familiar to many Malaysian Chinese families, serves as another link between memory and food, further underscoring the festival's deep cultural roots. As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches on September 25, its essence remains a testament to the often unnoticed yet crucial relationship between effort, abundance, and the food we eat daily.
