Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warns against racing ahead on AI models: ‘We must slow the pace’

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has cautioned against the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) models, warning of the potential dangers of "superintelligent" systems. "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models," he wrote on his personal website. Amodei acknowledged the benefits of AI, including the potential to cure major diseases in the next 5-10 years and accelerate economic growth, but emphasized its significant risks.

These include the loss of control over AI systems, misuse for cyberattacks and bioterrorism, and serious economic disruption. Amodei argued that not developing AI would deprive humanity of its benefits but warned that "building it too fast is reckless." He emphasized the need for "more prudence" in addressing AI risks, suggesting a slower pace of development to allow time for risk prevention.

Amodei proposed a three-step plan for building AI at a balanced rate, calling for external evaluators to verify safety practices, investigate incidents, and assess AI model alignment. He urged AI companies to establish common safety standards and coordinate with government support, especially concerning authoritarian governments.
