Abia lauds driver for returning passenger’s N400,000

The Abia State Government praised bus driver Onyekachi Ikpendu for returning over N400,000 that a passenger left forgotten in his vehicle, highlighting the driver's integrity and sincerity. Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, the state Commissioner for Transport, stated that the driver's decision to return the money demonstrated responsible citizenship and reflected a positive change in the mindset of residents.

Ukaegbu urged others to follow the driver's example of honesty and integrity. The passenger, Nkechi John, a trader, had inadvertently left her bag containing the money and other personal belongings at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal while disembarking. Upon discovering her loss, she contacted the terminal, where Ikpendu was waiting to reunite her with her lost items.

Ikpendu expressed gratitude for not having to "eat somebody's sweat" and emphasized that he would not have been tempted to keep the money, as it did not belong to him. He credited his faith in the reward of honesty and good deeds. John, full of gratitude, thanked the driver for his actions and Governor Alex Otti for building the terminal, which had facilitated her recovery of the cash.

Dr Ukaegbu commented that the incident showcased the changing attitudes of residents towards doing the right thing without external compulsion.
