A.J. Hinch Gives Unfortunate Wenceel Pérez Injury Update

The Detroit Tigers have been anxiously awaiting Wenceel Pérez's return from an unusual injury, but the prognosis is grim. According to A.J. Hinch, Pérez is "most likely" done for the year, as reported by Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic. Pérez suffered an orbital fracture and vision issues after an exercise band snapped during a postgame arm-care routine in June.

While the initial fracture was concerning, the lingering vision problems have made Pérez's recovery much more challenging. The team had hoped that his vision would return to normal during his rehab stint with the Triple-A Toledo, but Pérez was pulled from the assignment in August due to his vision not improving. Pérez's performance during the rehab stint was poor, going 0-for-12 with six strikeouts.

His 2026 offensive numbers were already lackluster, with a .180 average, seven home runs, 17 RBI, and a .594 OPS. Pérez's value lies in his versatility and ability to play multiple positions, but Detroit's outfield situation has changed significantly, with players like Max Clark, Ben Malgeri, Brett Callahan, Parker Meadows, and Matt Vierling competing for spots.

Pérez has been unable to participate in the team's September roster decisions, and the 2027 outfield evaluation will have to wait until he is fully healthy, which appears unlikely at this point.
