50 Young Musicians Receive M.S. Subbulakshmi Fellowship As Sri Shanmukhananda Sabha Honours Emerging Talent Across India

Fifty young musicians from across India were honored on Saturday with the Sri Shanmukhananda M.S. Subbulakshmi Fellowship in Music, established to provide financial support to gifted artists and inspire them to continue their chosen careers. The awards took place during a celebration marking 100 years since legendary Carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi recorded her debut in 1926.

The fellowship covers various disciplines such as vocal music, violin, flute, mridangam, tabla, and nadaswaram. Each recipient will receive an annual stipend of Rs 1 lakh for three years. With this year's awards, the Sabha has now bestowed the fellowship upon 231 young musicians.

Sri Shanmukhananda Sabha president V Shankar explained that the program aims to motivate young musicians to concentrate on their fields and advance their careers. During the ceremony, Dr Nanditha Ravi was presented with the Sri Shanmukhananda Dr M.S. Subbulakshmi Sangeetha Pracharya Award for her contributions to music education. The award includes a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a ceremonial lamp, and a citation. Thus far, 25 musicians have received this prestigious accolade.

To commemorate the centenary of Subbulakshmi's first recording, a special postal cover and cancellation were also unveiled at the event by Ramchandra Jaybhaye, Chief Postmaster General of Maharashtra Circle. This year also coincides with Subbulakshmi's 110th birth anniversary. The Sabha owns the original 1926 disc and plans to play it during the centenary festivities.

In 1926, Subbulakshmi's debut recording was released by the Twin Record Company when she was just ten years old. Shankar highlighted the Sabha's possession of the original disc, which will be played during the centenary celebrations.
