‘You are not alone’: Deputy minister urges domestic violence victims to seek help after Malaysian mother killed in Perth

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 11 — Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Lim Hui Ying urged domestic violence victims in Malaysia to know that they are not alone and can seek help and protection. She emphasized that domestic violence should not be normalized or treated as a private matter, as it is a serious form of violence that can deeply impact victims, children, families, and society.

Lim highlighted that preventing violence, protecting victims, and providing them with necessary support requires a collective responsibility. In a Facebook post, she encouraged victims to reach out to trusted individuals or access services like Talian Kasih (15999) and WhatsApp (019-261 5999) for assistance, available 24/7.

Lim expressed her sorrow over the death of Malaysian national Tan Kah Ming in Perth, Australia, last month, believed to be linked to domestic violence. She conveyed condolences to Tan's family and family members, while respecting the privacy of the deceased's loved ones during their painful time. Tan, 28, from Penang, died after reportedly being assaulted on August 26, found unconscious at a residence in St James, Perth.

The mother of three was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital, where she passed away shortly thereafter. Lim respected the ongoing investigation and deferred to the relevant authorities, urging the family to find solace and grieve in peace.
