‘You are not alone’: Deputy minister urges domestic violence victims to seek help after Malaysian mother killed in Perth

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 11 — Domestic violence should never be considered a private issue or endured alone, Deputy Women, Family and Community Development Minister Lim Hui Ying stated. She emphasized that such violence can have severe consequences not only for the victim, but also for children, families, and the broader society. Lim stressed that efforts to prevent violence, protect victims, and ensure they receive the support they need are a collective responsibility.

"To those facing domestic violence, I want to stress that you are not alone and that you have the right to seek help and protection," Lim declared in a Facebook post. She urged victims to reach out to trusted individuals or appropriate assistance services, such as Talian Kasih (15999) and WhatsApp (019-261 5999), which are available 24/7, seven days a week.

Lim assured that the ministry will persist in its efforts to curb violence and provide protection and support to victims and their families, in accordance with existing laws and protection measures. The news of Malaysian national Tan Kah Ming's death in Perth, Australia, last month, linked to domestic violence, saddened Lim. She expressed her condolences to Tan's family, acknowledging the tragic loss and the impact on their loved ones.

Regarding the Perth case, Lim respected the investigation process and the actions of the Australian government, stating that they will leave the matter in the hands of the relevant authorities. She further emphasized the need to respect Tan's family's privacy during this deeply painful and difficult time, giving them the space to grieve and come to terms with their loss.

Tan, a 28-year-old mother from Penang, was found unconscious at a residence on Taree Street, St James, on August 26, before being rushed to Royal Perth Hospital, where she passed away shortly after arrival.
