US Announces New Delivery of Defence Equipment to Nigeria

The United States has recently delivered additional defense equipment to Nigeria, as part of their ongoing cooperation to combat terrorism and insurgency in the country. The latest shipment, which arrived over the weekend, was airlifted by a U.S. Air Force C-17 aircraft, according to the Africa Command (AFRICOM). AFRICOM confirmed that the equipment was provided under a foreign military sales agreement, highlighting the strengthening of the U.S.-Nigeria partnership in addressing security threats in the region.

However, AFRICOM did not specify the type or amount of the equipment, or the recipients who received it. The Nigerian Defence Headquarters and armed forces have yet to confirm the delivery. The Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, declined to comment on the matter. Despite recent reports of a 200-person U.S. personnel withdrawal from Nigeria, Uba clarified that this does not signify the end of the security partnership.

He emphasized that the U.S.-Nigeria security relationship remains strong and enduring, with cooperation continuing in areas of mutual interest such as intelligence sharing, training, technical assistance, and other forms of professional military cooperation. On the issue of the withdrawn personnel, Uba stressed that the relationship between the two nations is designed to enhance their capabilities and cooperation in combating terrorism and insurgency, including the threats posed by groups like Boko Haram and ISIS-West Africa.
