Mumbai: After Bhiwandi, MRVC Plans All-Weather Subways At Trespassing-Prone Stretches

Mumbai's railway authorities, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC), are planning to construct all-weather subways at several locations prone to trespassing incidents. Following the successful completion of the first such subway near Bhiwandi Road, the corporation is considering sites like Thane-Dighe, Sanpada carshed and Titwala-Khadavli.

The goal is to create safer alternatives for people crossing railway tracks and reduce fatalities related to trespassing. While the exact fourth location remains unspecified, the design and dimensions of the new subway structures are still under finalization. The Bhiwandi project serves as a blueprint for the proposed crossings, as it was built beneath seven operational railway lines on the Panvel-Vasai Road section without disrupting train services.

Four large precast reinforced concrete segments were installed underground using hydraulic pushing technology, and the subway features multiple waterproofing layers, protective membranes, covered approaches, lighting, ventilation, and drainage systems. The ultimate aim is to enhance safety and connectivity by providing pedestrians and two-wheelers with secure and efficient crossing options.
