UK train stations test live translation technology for travel announcements

British train stations are testing live translation technology that broadcasts announcements in multiple languages via passengers' headphones. The innovative system aims to eliminate language barriers and enhance the travel experience for all passengers. Bristol Temple Meads, a major train hub in the south-west of England, is piloting the technology on four platforms until November.

Brighton station is also testing the service for an extended year-long trial. The technology combines Auracast, a Bluetooth low energy audio feature, with AI-powered translation by XRAI. This pilot project received £45,000 in grant funding to develop transport solutions in a collaborative environment. Bristol Temple Meads, a Grade 1-listed building with unique architectural features, often experiences challenges in delivering clear announcements due to its high metal roofs, stone arches, and glass-walled sidings.

Passengers with Auracast-enabled smartphones and compatible headphones can access the service, with the latter becoming more widely available in the coming years. The Bluetooth Special Interest Group predicts that eight out of 10 new devices in 2028 will be Auracast-enabled. By 2028, the technology could be seamlessly integrated into public transport, including buses and trains, allowing passengers to receive announcements in their preferred language while using other devices like smartphones or listening to podcasts.
