Todd Monken speaks on Deshaun Watson’s preparation for his first start in almost two years

Coach Todd Monken expressed satisfaction with Deshaun Watson's preparation for his upcoming first NFL start in nearly two years, which is slated for the Browns' season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars on August 24. This marks a significant turnaround for Watson, who has only played in 19 games since joining the Cleveland Browns in 2022 due to various off-field issues and frequent injuries.

Despite receiving only five completions out of twelve passes in a preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, where he was met with boos, Monken believes Watson has been making substantial progress. The Browns have a history of quarterback conflicts, having started Joe Flacco last season before eventually bringing in Watson, who is now in the final year of his $230 million contract.

Monken highlighted Watson's increased comfort with the game plan and concepts during the recent competition between Shedeur Sanders and himself, stating that he "really likes where he's at." Watson's first two games will be played on the road, starting with a trip to Tampa after the Jaguars matchup. A strong performance could improve his reception when the Browns return home to face the Carolina Panthers on September 27.
