To investigate this, researchers aimed to characterize the impact of solid food introduction on the compositional succession and functional maturation of the infant gut microbiota during weaning.
Infant faecal samples, along with corresponding dietary data, were collected at five distinct time points. The first sampling occurred pre-weaning, when infants were 4-6 months old. Subsequent samples were taken 4, 8, and 12 weeks after the first introduction of solid foods. Additionally, a late weaning stage sample was collected, approximately 12 months later, as the infants transitioned to a family diet. The composition of the faecal microbiota was analyzed using full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
The introduction of solid foods led to a significant restructuring of the gut microbiota. This restructuring was characterized by notable increases in microbial richness, evenness, and phylogenetic diversity, with statistical values indicating these changes as significant (p < 0.30, FDR 0.30, FDR).
