Elephants facing anthropogenic hazards in Assam

Elephants in Assam are increasingly facing human-induced hazards, as recent incidents have highlighted the dangers they encounter. Just days after a female elephant's trunk was freed from a wire-mesh snare near Raimona National Park, another sub-adult elephant was freed from a truck tyre around its neck in Golaghat district. The tyre had been stuck around the elephant's neck, causing distress, and officials from the Golaghat Forest Division and the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) were called to the scene to assess the situation and monitor the herd's movement.

On a separate occasion, an elephant calf was found trapped in a muddy trench at Seconee Tea Estate, near Kaziranga National Park. The herd, estimated to be 4-6 weeks old, attempted to guide the calf out of the trench before leaving. Local tea garden workers and villagers alerted the Kaziranga National Park authorities, leading to a CWRC rescue team being dispatched to help.

The distressed calf, dehydrated and suffering from muscular exhaustion, was taken to a nearby forest beat office for veterinary care, where it was given fluids to aid recovery. The team waited for the herd to return to search for the calf, but it was eventually admitted to CWRC for rehabilitation.

This incident, along with the previous one, demonstrates the ongoing challenges elephants face in Assam due to anthropogenic hazards. The tale of the calf's rescue and rehabilitation reflects the collaborative efforts of local communities, forest officials, and wildlife experts. Despite prioritizing the calf's return to its wild herd, the rehabilitation center has become a second home for the young elephant, offering it a chance at life.
