Sh39 billion road projects to transform Meru County as farmers get cheaper seeds and fertilizer

Meru County in Kenya is set to undergo a transformative Sh39 billion road construction programme under Deputy President Kithure Kindiki's leadership. The initiative aims to enhance rural accessibility and reduce transport costs, benefiting both farmers and residents. Several long-awaited roads, including the Kionyo-Kanyakine-Muti O’Kiama-Ketha Kanaro-Mitunguu highway, are currently under construction or being planned.

Kindiki expressed confidence in the contractor's ability to complete the projects, emphasizing that such infrastructure investments are for future generations.

In addition to the road projects, the government is also investing in improving Meru Town with 17 kilometers of upgraded roads at a cost of Sh3.7 billion. The initiative is part of a broader effort to boost household incomes by making it easier for farmers to transport their produce and access essential services. Farmers have also been relieved from the burden of expensive fertilizers and certified maize seed, with prices reduced significantly.

The seed subsidy targets about 40 million kilogrammes, investing an estimated Sh6 billion in farmer incomes.

Kindiki highlighted the government's commitment to long-term development, urging leaders to focus on projects with lasting economic and social value rather than short-term political gains. He urged cooperation between leaders and citizens to ensure projects are delivered effectively. The post emphasizes that the government's interventions in Meru, which include electricity connections, education, healthcare, and technical education, are all part of a comprehensive strategy to improve the county's overall well-being.
