Saudi Arabia urges firm UN Security Council action over Houthi attacks

Saudi Arabia urged the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action against Houthi attacks on the Kingdom, warning that the attacks threaten regional security and international shipping through the Red Sea and Bab Al-Mandab Strait. Ambassador Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, Saudi Arabia's Permanent Representative to the UN, made the call during an emergency Security Council meeting.

He strongly condemned the terrorist and criminal attacks on civilian and economic targets in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran, which injured 73 people, including women and children. Al-Wasil emphasized that the escalation jeopardizes not only Saudi Arabia's security and national assets but also international trade in the region.

The Saudi Permanent Representative called on the Security Council to uphold its responsibility to maintain international peace and security by taking a clear and decisive stance against the attacks. He also urged full implementation of relevant Security Council resolutions and an end to all support enabling the Houthis to continue their attacks, which threaten regional security and vital maritime routes.

Al-Wasil reaffirmed Saudi Arabia's right to defend itself and protect its security, sovereignty, and citizens in line with the UN Charter and international law. He reiterated the Kingdom's support for Yemen's unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity while emphasizing Saudi Arabia's commitment to a comprehensive and sustainable Yemeni-led political solution that ensures security and stability for the Yemeni people.
