Sam Bankman-Fried took his FTX fraud conviction to the Supreme Court

Mrs. Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah, a newly appointed Supreme Court (SC) Judge, has expressed confidence that she and her fellow newly sworn-in colleagues will maintain independence and impartiality in their judicial duties. Speaking on behalf of her colleagues during their swearing-in ceremony by President John Dramani Mahama, Mrs. Justice Essah emphasized the importance of interpreting and applying the law faithfully, impartially, and courageously.

The newly appointed SC judges include Mrs. Justice Essah, Mr. Justice Edward Amoako Asante, and Mr. Justice Tony Forson, a private legal practitioner and former President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA). Mrs. Justice Essah expressed deep gratitude to President Mahama for appointing them as justices of the Supreme Court of Ghana, and thanked God for their strength and guidance throughout their professional journeys.

She reminded the audience that they had taken solemn oaths to uphold the Constitution and Ghanaian laws, and to administer justice without bias or favor. Mrs. Justice Essah described their role in the judiciary as a sacred public trust, and highlighted the importance of serving the people in whom sovereignty lies. She acknowledged the contributions of various constitutional bodies and institutions that played a crucial role in the process leading to their appointment, including the Judicial Council, the Council of State, and Parliament.

Mrs. Justice Essah also expressed gratitude to the families, friends, colleagues, and mentors who supported them throughout their careers, and who often made sacrifices to enable their success. She pledged that they would hear every case with fairness and impartiality, decide according to the law, and act with courage and integrity in every judgment they deliver, remaining faithful to the Constitution and their solemn oaths.

Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie were present at the ceremony.
