Qatar Museums announces new permanent artwork for MIA park by Gerhard Richter

Doha, Qatar: Qatar Museums has announced the creation of a new permanent artwork, Doha Pavilion: Gerhard Richter, by the renowned artist Gerhard Richter. The structure will be a free-standing work of art and architecture, showcasing a distinct collection of Richter's paintings and sculptures. The pavilion will be located in Doha's MIA Park and will be unveiled on November 20, 2026, coinciding with the opening of Rubaiya Qatar, the nation's new contemporary art quadrennial.

The announcement was made during a roundtable discussion with Selldorf Architects' Principal Annabelle Selldorf and Qatar Museums Advisor and Co-Curator of Rubaiya Qatar, Tom Eccles. Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums, also discussed Richter's long-standing relationship with the museum, including the creation of the permanent site-specific installation Shadows Traveling on the Sea and the major exhibition The Curious Desert at the National Museum of Qatar.

In her remarks, Sheikha Al Mayassa emphasized Qatar's commitment to making culture an open space for exchange and learning through public art installations. She expressed her pleasure at adding the collaboration with Gerhard Richter to this journey, noting its significance as part of the ongoing legacy of the Qatar-Germany 2017 Year of Culture.

The Doha Pavilion will serve as an important addition to Qatar's cultural landscape, offering a new space for reflection and engagement with the work of a leading contemporary artist.
