Gordon a better fit for Barca than Rashford – Deco

Barcelona sporting director Deco believes that Anthony Gordon's playing style was a better fit for manager Hansi Flick's Barcelona than Marcus Rashford's during the summer transfer window. Rashford had a successful loan spell at the Catalan club last season, scoring 14 goals in all competitions as the team claimed La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

Barcelona had the option to make the 28-year-old Manchester United forward a permanent signing for £30.3m (35m euros) at the end of his loan period, but opted not to extend his stay and he returned to Old Trafford. Deco revealed that both Gordon and Manchester City midfielder Rodri were the club's two most expensive signings this summer, and he explained why Barcelona ultimately chose Gordon.

"We are extremely grateful to Rashford," Deco said, praising the England star's contribution last season. "However, our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony’s. His style fits with what the coach is looking for." Deco stated that Barcelona identified a lack of energy when Raphinha was absent last season and felt Gordon could address the issue.

"In the case of Gordon, we saw that he was one of the figures we needed," Deco said. "When Raphinha wasn't on the pitch, the team lost energy and with him we could solve it." The club had analyzed several wingers before settling on Gordon, emphasizing the need for more intensity. Gordon has made five appearances for Barcelona, contributing four assists and helping the team win all four La Liga games, scoring 17 goals and conceding only two.
