Punjab and Haryana High Court bins FIR over Yaariyan 2 song: Visuals not insult to Sikhs

The Punjab and Haryana High Court recently dismissed a case against the makers of the 2023 film Yaariyan 2, after it was alleged that a song in the movie had hurt the religious sentiments of Sikhs. The court ruled that the song was a creative expression and not an intentional attempt to insult the Sikh religion. Justice Shalini Singh Nagpal stated that the portrayal of a non-Amritdhari Sikh wearing a 'Sri Sahib/Kirpan' in the movie cannot be considered an insult to the Sikh religion.

The court emphasized that a grievance expressed by an individual belonging to the Sikh community does not represent the sentiments of the entire community. The FIR, which was registered against the director, producer, and actor of the film, was quashed as there was no proof of a deliberate or malicious intention to hurt religious feelings.

The court acknowledged that the portrayal of the song was an inadvertent mistake due to a lack of knowledge about Sikh customs and assured that it would not be repeated in the future.
