PS Ombam warns Nyanza traders as rejected exports threaten lucrative markets

Nyanza farmers and traders have been urged to improve their products and meet international market standards to prevent losing lucrative export opportunities due to rejected goods. Principal Secretary for Trade Regina Ombam stated that the government is collaborating with the private sector and the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry to ensure farmers and entrepreneurs are aware of export market requirements before investing in production.

At a meeting in Kisumu on Friday, September 11, 2026, Ombam emphasized the need for farmers to adhere to standards when growing products like avocados and sesame for export. She urged them to fully understand the market's demands and respond accordingly. The meeting aimed to discuss strategies to enhance trade and investment in the Nyanza region.

Ombam highlighted the region's potential in products such as groundnuts, sesame, and sunflower, but stressed the importance of moving beyond raw commodities and processing them into higher-value items to fetch better prices in global markets. She also challenged local businesses to capitalize on Kenya's trade agreements, urging them to comprehend the conditions to effectively target markets like the European Union.

Ombam pointed towards expanding opportunities in the creative and sporting economies around Lake Victoria, urging the region to consider investments in science, technology, healthcare, and infrastructure to strengthen its ties with neighboring countries. Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili echoed Ombam's sentiments, highlighting Kisumu's potential as a commercial hub and advocating for a 'Buy Kisumu, Build Kisumu' initiative.

He emphasized the importance of creating a favorable environment for businesses and encouraging residents to purchase locally produced goods.
