Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski arrives in Kyiv as Russian drones attack

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski traveled to Kyiv's main train station on September 11 as the city faced Russian drone attacks. Moments later, Kyiv Independent reporters reported explosions and the activation of air raid sirens in central Kyiv. The purpose of Sikorski's visit remains unclear, but it comes amid escalating tensions between Poland and Ukraine over historical issues.

The recent diplomatic rift centered on the naming of a regiment by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) during World War II. However, recent communications between Zelensky and Polish President Karol Nawrocki suggest a cooling of tensions. Sikorski's trip might focus on facilitating Poland's support for transporting Ukrainian agricultural products westward due to the blockade of the Black Sea.

EU diplomats are reportedly working to improve the flow of Ukrainian agricultural goods through the bloc's "solidarity lanes." Additionally, Ukraine aims to fully open all six EU enlargement clusters by year-end, a prerequisite for advancing its EU membership bid. Currently, only two out of six required reforms have been implemented by Ukraine.

The decision requires consensus from all EU members, with Poland concerned about potential economic competition from Ukraine, particularly in agriculture and trucking. Another possible discussion point could be the upcoming package of EU sanctions, anticipated to be the most extensive ever, scheduled for negotiation and adoption in the fall.
