PLD Space Unveils Larger Miura 9 Rocket During Prime Minister’s Visit to Elche

Spanish aerospace firm PLD Space showcased its upgraded Miura 9 rocket during a visit to its Elche plant by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. This newer version of the company's Miura 5 launcher promises enhanced capabilities for launching medium-sized satellites, along with advancements in recovery, reusability, and post-flight data analysis.

Prime Minister Sánchez hailed the project as a crucial step in bolstering Spain and Europe's self-reliance in space exploration. Accompanied by Science Minister Diana Morant and PLD Space leaders, including co-founders Raúl Torres and Raúl Verdú, the Prime Minister toured the firm's engineering, engine, and propulsion production sites. Sánchez emphasized the Spanish government's financial commitment, including €170 million for PLD Space, and defended public investment in science and innovation.

PLD Space recently inked its first contract through a European Space Agency initiative aimed at enhancing Europe's independent launch capabilities, reducing dependence on U.S. companies like SpaceX and Chinese providers. The €158.9 million deal builds upon Spain's pledge to contribute up to €169 million to the program.

The Miura 5 can transport payloads of up to 540kg to sun-synchronous orbit and roughly one tonne to equatorial orbit. The larger Miura 9 is anticipated to boost these capacities to approximately one tonne and 1.5 tonnes, respectively. PLD Space's CEO Ezequiel Sánchez noted that the rocket's increased volume and mass will enable the transportation of more satellites.

Emphasizing the impact on Spain's aerospace ecosystem, PLD Space currently employs around 550 professionals with a ten-year growth plan. The newly unveiled Miura 9 will measure 49 metres tall, compared to the Miura 5's 35 metres, and feature a more advanced recovery system. The company's expansion is also benefiting Spain's aerospace supply chain, with over €42.7 million invested since 2024, and PLD Space's total investment reaching €488 million.

Prime Minister Sánchez highlighted how advanced technology companies can bolster national industry, generate skilled employment, and contribute to European aerospace sovereignty. Ezequiel Sánchez reiterated the company's commitment to Elche, praising the city's competitive atmosphere and appeal for attracting talent. Currently, about 20% of PLD Space's workforce is international, but the company values its locally trained staff, comprising 23 different nationalities.
