PlayStation Ditched Hideo Kojima's 'Physint' on Budget Concerns, Missed Deadlines

Sony reportedly terminated financial backing for Hideo Kojima's espionage game, Physint, citing budget overruns, delayed schedules, lack of long-term exclusivity, and the potential loss of PlayStation-exclusive status. The developer has since entered into a publishing agreement with Xbox, which intends to release the title on both Xbox and PC platforms.

Additionally, Sony has granted Physint film and television rights. Despite the sudden shift, Kojima expressed his commitment to the project, stating that the game remains a significant endeavor for both him and Kojima Productions. The company hastily sought alternative partners after receiving notice from Sony that funding for Physint would be discontinued.

Sony's decision to withdraw support carries potential implications, particularly for the PC gaming sector. Sony recently announced it would no longer release single-player PlayStation games on PC, which would have otherwise benefited from Kojima Productions' PC release of Physint, similar to the approach taken for Death Stranding.

In contrast, Xbox offers cross-platform support, ensuring Physint's availability on PC and Xbox. Microsoft expressed its appreciation for Kojima's decision to join forces with Xbox, emphasizing the company's belief in the developer's ability to create innovative, groundbreaking, and AAA games.
