Past is past, but Umno delegates want PAS to prove it can be different

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — At the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, Muhammad Awang, 68, reflected on Umno's relationship with PAS over the years. The Umno Kuala Krai division secretary recalled how the parties' cooperation turned into rivalry and back again. Muhammad believes the past should not hinder them from trying again, urging both sides to put aside their egos and be willing to make compromises.

"We have to be big-hearted," he said, adding that any renewed cooperation would require both parties to allocate seats in the next election balanced between them.

Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi proposed a "Grand Collaboration" to avoid political clashes that could harm all sides. This political understanding would prioritize common interests, respect differences in ideology and identity, and practice tolerance and flexibility. However, Zahid warned against betraying political partners, even if it is done discreetly.

Muhammad emphasized that the previous experience under Muafakat Nasional should not prevent Umno and PAS from trying again, as they had previously been separated.

A delegate in his 60s noted that PAS' previous political decisions should be treated as lessons, not obstacles to future cooperation. He believed Umno and PAS should work together in the next general election, seeing it as a step towards strengthening Malays and Muslims. Another delegate highlighted the importance of stability in Umno, suggesting that it makes the party more appealing to people facing an uncertain economic situation.

The willingness to move forward does not mean delegates have forgotten past betrayals. Shah Zanuriman Nuar Paras Khan, 40, emphasized that rebuilding trust requires a spirit of camaraderie, loyalty, mutual understanding, and clear boundaries. Both delegates and officials agree that past political betrayals should serve as lessons rather than prevent Umno and PAS from working together again.
