Over 4,000 Nigerians return from India under amnesty programme

In India, over 4,000 Nigerians have voluntarily returned home under an amnesty programme aimed at regularising the immigration status of undocumented foreigners or allowing them to leave the country without penalties. Nigeria’s High Commissioner to India, Ambassador Saidu Dahiru Muhammad, revealed this during a session with diplomatic correspondents covering the 2026 BRICS Summit in New Delhi.

Muhammad discussed his efforts to bolster bilateral relations with India and address issues affecting Nigerians living in the country. Initially, the programme offered a six-month window, which was subsequently extended by an additional three months upon his appointment. Nigeria requested further extensions ranging from three to six months to accommodate more Nigerians.

Upon arriving in India on July 23, Muhammad held a virtual meeting with Nigerians nationwide, urging them to respect Indian laws, uphold Nigeria’s image, and engage in legitimate activities. Participants highlighted concerns about visa overstays, renewals, extensions, student welfare, and medical challenges. Subsequent discussions with Indian officials, including those from the Ministry of External Affairs, focused on immigration and other issues concerning Nigerian citizens.

The High Commissioner praised the Indian government for the amnesty initiative, noting it offered undocumented Nigerians the chance to legalise their status or return to Nigeria without facing penalties. Muhammad also addressed the welfare of Nigerians in India with Indian authorities, emphasizing cooperation in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, energy, mining, manufacturing, trade, and investment.
