Nach Sachsen-Anhalt: AfD hofft auf Rückenwind bei niedersächsischer Kommunalwahl

Am coming Sunday, citizens in Lower Saxony will cast their votes in the local elections, selecting councils and mayors. The AfD, at least in certain regions, is a right-wing extremist party with ambitious goals. Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD's top candidate in Saxony-Anhalt, declared in a video clip: "Let's not just have the blue wave of success in Saxony-Anhalt, but also in Lower Saxony."

He may become the first AfD party leader. Nearly 6.3 million people can participate in the local elections, roughly four times more than the number who voted in the previous week's Lower Saxony state election. Experts consider it unlikely that the AfD will secure a top position in a city or district. Therefore, achieving even a seat in a larger runoff election would be a significant accomplishment for the AfD.

CDU party leader Sebastian Lechner, who leads the opposition in the Lower Saxony state parliament, shares this assessment. "I believe we are still a strong center country in Lower Saxony, with strong center parties, and I am quite convinced that most of the runoff elections will be between CDU, SPD, or independent candidates, perhaps even with a green candidate," he stated.
