Man jailed after threatening to behead son’s teacher in French village

A man from the French village of Le Fauga has been sentenced to six months in jail after threatening to behead a primary school teacher who had disciplined his son. The incident occurred six days after the altercation took place. The teacher, in her fifties, has been granted official protection and taken sick leave. Education Minister Edouard Geffray emphasized the importance of teachers' safety, stating that no teacher should be afraid to perform their duties.

This case marks one of the first applications of a recently enacted law intended to protect school staff from potential threats by family members. The teacher's colleagues did not report for work on Monday in solidarity with the victim following the threat made on Friday. The threat was allegedly made by the father outside the school following a meeting with the teacher.

The teacher had previously disciplined the boy for misbehavior in class. The father subsequently apologized, but a judicial complaint was filed, leading to his appearance before a judge in Toulouse. The judge considered the case especially sensitive due to the recent Samuel Paty beheading incident, which occurred six years ago. The father was ordered to serve his sentence in prison, undergo a citizenship course, and refrain from contacting the victim or approaching the school.
