French father jailed for threatening to behead his son’s teacher

A 47-year-old man has been sentenced to six months in jail in France after threatening to behead a female primary school teacher in the village of Le Fauga, near Toulouse. The incident occurred six days after the teacher disciplined the man's son at the school. The teacher, who is in her 50s, has since been granted official protection and is on sick leave.

French Education Minister Edouard Geffray emphasized the need for teachers to feel safe in their profession, stating that attacking one teacher is an attack on the entire institution. This case follows a beheading of a teacher in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine six years ago, which deeply affected France. In this incident, the teacher's colleagues did not report for work on the day following the threat.

The man was called to the school for a chat with the teacher and the school administration after his son had misbehaved in class. The teacher later reprimanded the boy for his behavior. The father threatened the teacher outside the school, allegedly saying he would cut off her head if he were a man. He subsequently apologized, but a judicial complaint was filed, leading to his appearance in court.

The judge criticized the man's remarks, particularly in light of the recent Samuel Paty case, which is still fresh in the minds of French people. The judge sentenced the man to six months in jail, rather than house arrest, due to the seriousness of his actions. The man expressed remorse during the sentencing. The Toulouse prosecutor had requested house arrest, but the judge deemed jail time necessary.

The man must also complete a citizenship course and refrain from contacting the victim or approaching the school. It is believed that the boy and his younger sister may be transferred to another school outside Le Fauga.
