Man charged after allegedly stealing car with baby inside

A 51-year-old man from Swan Hill has been arrested and charged after allegedly carjacking a vehicle with a seven-month-old baby inside at Beverford, Victoria's north-west. The infant was discovered uninjured on the side of the Murray Valley Highway by a passer-by. The accused man was remanded to appear in court in December. According to Victoria Police, the incident occurred around 11am on Wednesday when the 51-year-old man flagged down a motorist on the highway.

A 36-year-old woman assisted the man and during the struggle, he stole a Holden Commodore. The woman suffered minor injuries during the altercation. The stolen car was found abandoned in bushes near Pire Road in Nyah, approximately 10km from the alleged carjacking location. Police arrested the man several hours later and charged him with multiple offenses including carjacking, child stealing, assault, theft of a motor vehicle, and violating bail conditions. He appeared in court on Thursday and will next face Mildura Magistrates Court in December.
