Madhya Pradesh Dams Fill To Brim After Good Rains, State Drops Emergency Power Purchase Plan

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: The state's electricity department has abandoned plans to purchase power from neighboring regions in anticipation of a weak monsoon, following heavy rains that have filled dams across the region. Initially, the department was concerned about the El Nino phenomenon, which predicted scanty rains. However, bountiful rains, particularly in the Vindhya, Bundelkhand, and Chambal regions, have led to dams being filled to the brim.

Consequently, the electricity department has dropped its emergency plan and can even resume hydro power generation if needed in the future. Vishesh Gadpale, secretary to the Energy Department, stated that with good rains and adequate water in the dams, there is no requirement for an emergency plan for power at the moment. The electricity department had previously prepared an emergency plan to procure electricity at cheaper rates from other states during times of need in the coming months due to the prediction of a weak monsoon.

However, the situation has reversed following the good rains. The state's current power demand is around 20,000 megawatts.
