Laura Wolvaardt ready to guide greenhorn Proteas attack in historic Zimbabwe Clash

Proteas Women’s captain Laura Wolvaardt is eagerly anticipating her role in guiding a fledgling bowling attack against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on Friday. The prospect of playing in a new country and venue against unfamiliar opposition has sparked a wave of excitement within the team. Wolvaardt remarked, "It’s been a long time since I’ve played in a new country at a new venue against new opposition, so that’s pretty exciting."

At the beginning of her career, Wolvaardt had numerous opportunities against formidable teams like India. However, playing against Zimbabwe will be a refreshing change for the Proteas. She expressed, "This has been really cool. I’m looking forward to seeing how the wicket plays and how the conditions are."

The makeup of the Proteas Women’s bowling attack is significantly different from previous matches. Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, and Shabnim Ismail will not be part of the lineup. Instead, Wolvaardt will have to rely on a greenhorn attack, presenting a unique learning experience for the captain. "With senior bowlers, it’s easy to fall into a routine. They know the fields, we’re on the same wavelength, and we almost don’t need to speak about it. So, I think this will be a little bit different," Wolvaardt stated.

As the team captain, Wolvaardt is actively getting to know the new, young bowlers. "I’m still trying to get to know a lot of the new, young bowlers. We’ll see on the field how it goes. How players react under pressure is all very different, so there are a lot of things for me to learn as a captain, but I’m excited for the opportunity and to work with some new players," she concluded.
