Kapsch TrafficCom upgrades traffic management across 18 500 km New Zealand roads

AUKLAND, NEW ZEALAND - The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has successfully upgraded its traffic management system with the help of Kapsch TrafficCom, covering 18,500 kilometers of roads and highways across the country. The Dynac V17 system was introduced at the Auckland Traffic Operations Centre on June 10, 2026, marking the completion of a significant milestone in their ongoing partnership.

Daniel Vazquez, EVP APAC at Kapsch TrafficCom, praised the collaboration and commitment of the teams involved, highlighting the system's role in managing traffic operations nationwide. The system integrates various infrastructure components such as 18,500 km of roads, seven tunnels, and the Auckland Harbour Bridge, as well as 150,000 field devices like cameras and sensors.

Lucretia McDonald, Sr. Project Manager from NZTA, commended the close cooperation between partners, which facilitated a smooth transition and reliable system operation. The upgraded platform now provides NZTA operators with real-time network visibility, enabling quick responses to changing conditions and improving overall traffic management.

A notable feature of the new system is the capability for online updates, allowing for more frequent and efficient system improvements without downtime. The deployment is part of a larger upgrade plan for multiple Traffic Operations Centres in New Zealand, with additional centers in Wellington and Lyttleton Tunnel near Christchurch set to follow.

Once completed, the upgraded system will enable coordinated operations between centers and provide additional network redundancy. Kapsch TrafficCom is responsible for system maintenance and security, while NZTA manages day-to-day operations through its own traffic operators.
