Jimmy rues lost focus in KL Cup defeat by Shimabukuro

Kuala Lumpur: Jimmy Liong Kai Long, the National No. 1, narrowly missed an upset victory against 15-year-old American prodigy Tama Shimabukuro at the Leapmotor Kuala Lumpur Cup on Friday, but fell to a 12-10, 11-4 defeat in the second game, eliminating him from the round of 16 at The Hood. Shimabukuro later triumphed over fellow compatriot William Hsieh 11-7, 11-6 in the quarter-finals, advancing to the semi-finals, where he will face Hong Kong's Wong Hong Kit on Saturday.

Jimmy had hoped to utilize home advantage to secure a win, but admitted he lost focus at a crucial juncture in the opening game, saying, "I came in wanting to win very badly because it was home ground, but he played amazingly." The pressure of the match and the desire to deliver a memorable performance in front of his family, friends, and home fans may have added to his downfall.

Jimmy acknowledged that his defeat exposed several areas of his game that require improvement, including lack of preparation, health, and focus. The 28-year-old plans to take a brief break before resuming training and competing at the PPA Tour 1500 Brisbane and the 2026 PPA Tour Asia Hang Seng Bank Hong Kong Slam.
