It took 2,977 drones to create this stunning 9/11 memorial show. Here’s how they pulled it off

To commemorate the lives lost in the 9/11 attacks 25 years prior, an installation consisting of 2,977 drones was meticulously arranged to form the original design of the World Trade Center at full scale. The event, titled "2,977 Lights Over New York Harbor," took place on September 9 and was organized by the New York Foundation for the Arts.

The project's success relied on the collaboration of various agencies, including Sky Elements Drones, creative director Addison Mehr, Studio Drift, Ideko, designer Yan Paul Dubbelman, and artistic advisors Shigeru Ban and Dean Maltz. Families, survivors, and first responders provided input throughout the creation process.

The primary challenge faced by the organizers was securing a location suitable for setting the drones down, which required ample space. Kyle Pivnick, vice president of Sky Elements Drones, explained that considerable effort was invested in identifying the ideal path to bring the memorial to life. Ultimately, the U.S. Coast Guard granted permission to utilize a parking lot at its recruitment office on the southern edge of Manhattan as the staging area.

The memorial was displayed for a single night, and stringent flight restrictions were implemented to prevent any air traffic disruption, as well as to secure the ground from pedestrians and vehicles. The installation featured exactly 2,977 drones, with each drone representing a life lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the United Airlines crash site in Pennsylvania.

The drone count was intentionally limited to honor the memory of the victims, as adding more drones could have provided greater detail but was deemed unnecessary.

The drones initially appeared as two upward-swirling helixes before gradually reorganizing into the shape of the towers. This creation was inspired by a proposed World Cultural Center memorial designed by Think, which featured two open latticework towers. By replicating the towers' original height, the installation conveyed a sense of scale and an overwhelming presence. The use of precisely 2,977 drones ensured a poignant and personal remembrance.
