Haushalt: Widerstand in Unionsfraktion gegen Regenwaldfonds

In the Bundestag's Union faction, there is opposition to a government pledge of financial support for the preservation of rainforests. CDU deputy Andreas Mattfeldt, speaking to "Bild", argued that such a far-reaching commitment of funds is politically difficult to convey to the German population, especially when domestic citizens need to face noticeable and harsh austerity measures.

The Tropical Fund was launched at the World Climate Conference in Brazil in November. Countries that preserve their forests are to be rewarded under the novel model, while they will be penalized for every destroyed hectare of forest. This would be monitored using satellite images. Initially, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had announced a "significant amount" for the new fund.

Environment Minister Carsten Schneider and Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan (both SPD) later specified that the government would provide one billion euros over a ten-year period. CDU politicians want to block resources in the Budget Committee. Mattfeldt complained that unlike other donor countries, Germany had not tied its commitment to clear conditions.

Specific design and structures of the fund remained unclear. Environmental activists had demanded clear guidelines for the fund at the climate conference. Mattfeldt, who sits on the Bundestag's Budget Committee, announced that he would vigorously push for a comprehensive freeze of these resources during the consultations.
