Google Introduces A Faster Way To Transfer Passwords On Android

Google has unveiled an innovative Android feature designed to facilitate password and passkey transfers between different password manager applications. This new system eliminates the need for users to first download passwords into an unsecured text file. To initiate the transfer, users simply need to open their preferred password manager, select the option to import or copy passwords and passkeys from another provider, and Android will automatically identify existing password managers on the device to coordinate the transfer.

Upon tapping "Continue," users are directed to their existing password manager to select, review, and authorize the transfer. The entire process is said to take just a few seconds. The new system also supports passkey transfers, allowing users to move their existing passkeys to a new password manager without recreating them on multiple sites and apps.

Google emphasizes that this method is more secure than the conventional approach, which involved downloading passwords into an unencrypted text file. The new feature is currently available with Google Password Manager and select partner services, including 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane. The company plans to add more partners in the future. This feature is compatible with Android 8 devices and above.
