Flowers, fishing villages and a mirror to the sky in Bagan Datuk

In the coastal Perak district of Bagan Datuk, a three-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, travellers can escape the hustle and bustle of city life for a quieter, more serene experience. Fishing boats, sunflower fields, shallow sandbanks, and riverside views replace the typical urban scenery, making Bagan Datuk an attractive option for those seeking a break from the city.

One such attraction is Bagan Sungai Burung, a coastal fishing village that offers a glimpse into the community's traditions. Visitors can explore the village by buggy and observe the routines that have sustained the community for generations. Local tourism operator Khor Weng Kiang explained that efforts to develop tourism in the area began in 2014 as many younger residents left for jobs in larger towns and cities.

"As a fisherman's son, I saw many young people leaving the village after finishing school, while most of those who remained were older residents," he said. "We felt this needed to change, so we began developing our own tourism products."

The village's attractions include a 1.5-ha Sunflower Garden with over 2,000 plants, a Sungai Burung Aquarium featuring freshwater fish and other wildlife, and the Sky Mirror, a shallow sandbank that creates a mirror-like surface reflecting the sky when the tide cooperates. The Sky Mirror is reached by a 15-minute boat ride from the Bagan Datuk jetty and is only visible at certain times of the month, making it a unique and unpredictable experience.

For a more relaxed end to the day, Tuminah Hamidi Mosque, a riverside attraction designed in a floating style, offers a spacious prayer hall and Islamic calligraphy. With a capacity of up to 5,000 worshippers and ample parking, it's a convenient stop for Muslim visitors and those interested in Islamic architecture. Bagan Datuk's diverse attractions—fishing village, flowers, aquarium, Sky Mirror, and riverside sunset—make it an ideal destination for those seeking a short escape from the city.
