Family begs IG to probe Anambra nursing student’s death

The family of Chiamaka Chilaka, a nursing student from Anambra State, has requested the Inspector-General of Police to launch a new investigation into her death, claiming foul play was involved. Chilaka reportedly passed away on June 14, 2026, under suspicious circumstances at a residence in Anambra State. Her family's legal counsel, Euphemia Eleonu, criticized the handling of the case by the Anambra State Police Command, particularly the release of the main suspect, Ogochukwu Ugoeze, before the investigation was concluded.

Eleonu also accused the investigating officers, Supol Nwaije Francis and CSP Ayorinde David, of bias and compromising the case. The family expressed concern over the lack of updates from the police regarding the investigation's progress. They called for the two officers to step down from the case and for a new investigation team to be formed.

Eleonu requested that the family be kept informed of the investigation's status, subject to legal confidentiality. The lawyer emphasized that the determination of criminal responsibility should be left to a court of law, based on admissible evidence. She also urged Ogoeze to be rearrested, stating that suspects should be treated as innocent until proven guilty. The family sought answers about their daughter's death and demanded justice.
