Family begs IG to probe Anambra nursing student’s death

The family of Chiamaka Chilaka, a nursing student from Anambra State, has demanded a fresh investigation into her death, alleging foul play. Chilaka allegedly passed away on June 14, 2026, in circumstances her family believes may have involved murder at a compound where she resided in Anambra State. Her legal representative, Euphemia Eleonu, criticized the handling of the investigation by the Anambra State Police Command, specifically faulting the release of a prime suspect, Ogochukwu Ugoeze, and the lack of communication with the family about the investigation's progress.

The family also expressed concerns about bias and compromise within the police officers handling the case, Supol Nwaije Francis and CSP Ayorinde David. They requested both officers to recuse themselves and for a new investigation team to be formed. Eleonu urged the police to give the immediate family a briefing on the investigation's status and preserve all physical, forensic, documentary, and electronic evidence.

She stressed that the determination of criminal responsibility should ultimately be made by a court of competent jurisdiction. The family's elder brother, Ikenna Chilaka, expressed devastation over his sister's death and appealed for the Inspector-General of Police to intervene and secure justice by re-arresting all suspects.
