False and Misleading Claims on Healthcare During the Republican Midterm Convention

During the Republican Midterm Convention, presidential hopeful Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other GOP officials made false and misleading claims about healthcare during their 2-day gathering prior to the November midterm elections. These claims encompassed the economy, immigration, healthcare, and the 2020 election.

Vice President Vance boasted that they had "taken on big pharma and lowered drug costs for all of our citizens." However, federal data reveal that U.S. prescription drug prices only dipped by 0.9% in July, and have declined 3.1% from a year ago, marking the steepest year-over-year drop since 1963. The White House attributes these price reductions to Trump's deal with pharmaceutical companies and the TrumpRx website, which they claim provide relief to American families and prioritize patients.

Yet, drug pricing experts argue that other factors, such as a law from President Joe Biden's administration enabling Medicare to negotiate with pharmaceutical firms, and the growth of generic and biosimilar products, may be more influential in driving down consumer prices.

Trump further exaggerated by claiming to have delivered the "largest prescription drug price cuts in history, with differences of 400, 500, and even 600%." This assertion is mathematically impossible, as drug prices cannot drop by more than 100%, which would mean pharmaceutical companies are paying customers instead of the other way around.
