DSEL orders inquiry into quality of shoes, socks given to govt. schools

The Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL) has ordered an inquiry into the quality of shoes and socks distributed to government school children. The investigation was prompted by complaints alleging poor quality and defects in the footwear and apparel provided to students in classes 1 to 10. The DSEL has formed district-level inquiry committees, with Chief Executive Officers of zilla panchayats overseeing the inspections.

These committees, composed of officials not affiliated with DSEL, must complete their verification within 10 days and submit reports to the department's Commissioner. The Commissioner will then compile a state-level report based on the findings. The complaints highlighted issues such as torn shoes, loose soles, oversized footwear, and ill-fitting socks.

The verification teams are tasked with visiting at least 25% of schools in each district, examining the shoes and socks for delamination, loose stitching, and the use of unsuitable materials. They will also measure the shoes to ensure they conform to specifications and are not ill-fitting. The committees must document their process with photographs and include their reports, noting any terms and conditions, in English and full sentences.
